Soten Taiko is central Iowa's only taiko drumming group.
The name of the group translates as "Blue Sky” Taiko. Our goal is to share the ancient sounds of taiko drumming under the blue skies of Iowa. The group, which is part of the Japan America Society of Iowa, began in March of 2011 with the idea to introduce and share the traditional Japanese art form with the community. Starting with only two Taiko drums, the group has gradually added more Taiko Drums, Japanese instruments, and the Japanese Lion Dance, or Shishimai. The group has performed at a number of events, such as IAA Asian Heritage Festival, school and community cultural events, and corporate gatherings.
The JASI Taiko club practice at the Franklin Jr. High School in Des Moines. We play traditional and original Taiko compositions. Anyone is welcome to join the Taiko Club to learn how to play Japanese Taiko Drums, while having a fun workout and have a chance to perform in dozens of events in the community. If drumming is not for you, but you would still like to participate, we play other percussion instruments and fue (Japanese flute), as well.
